Truth Squad: Response to Fred Thompson on Abortion and the HLA
Team Huckabee
November 26, 2007
On Fox News Sunday [11/25/07], Sen. Fred Thompson claimed that Gov. Huckabee "supported the same thing that I've been saying as late as last year, leave [abortion] up to that states, essentially." This is simply not true. Unlike Thompson, Gov. Huckabee's position on abortion respects both federalism and the sanctity of human life.Gov. Huckabee agrees with Thompson that life begins at conception and that abortion is the taking of human life. He also agrees with Thompson that Roe v. Wade is based on an illegitimate application of the Constitution and that the federal government has no right to allow or prohibit abortion. Where they differ is that Thompson supports a "pro-choice" position for the individual states: He does not support the Human Life Amendment and is content to let the states authorize the destruction of innocent human life.
In contrast, Gov. Huckabee supports a constitutional amendment that would be proposed by Congress and ratified by the state legislatures. The Tenth Amendment makes explicit the notion that the federal government is limited only to the powers granted in the Constitution. For this reason, Gov. Huckabee believes that a constitutional amendment is necessary to ensure that every human being, from the moment of conception to natural death, is not denied equal protection of the law.
Gov. Huckabee has always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life. His convictions regarding the sanctity of life have always been clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering. Regrettably, the same cannot be said of Sen. Thompson.
